Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for most/all systems. Even though a spammer’s fake HTTP GET may be denied via .htaccess, the webserver will log the request anyway.
The only way to stop this is to use a http logfile analyser that either ignores bogus requests or allows you to manually filter based on IP or domain name.
